SCAM ALERT!!!

I was forwarded this email:
MY NAME IS DR TESSEY KEN OF NOOREGO AGENCY, LONDON.
I WANT TO MAKE A RESERVATION FOR A GROUP OF
CHRISTIAN DELEGATES COMING FOR A SEMINAR/CONFERENCE IN YOUR
CITY FROM 16TH OF JUNE TO 26TH OF JUNE 2007.
GET BACK TO ME IF THE DESIRED DATES ARE AVAILABLE.
REGARDS.
DR. TESSEY KEN

and then did some research on the Noorego Agency before replying. I instantly hit upon a scam warning.

This link is very interesting, it has many different kinds of scams that are being attempted.

To Schmooze or Not To Schmooze

Anyone who knows me knows that I am quite vocal about the way hotels are forced to solicit Travel Agencies...especially independent hotels. The whole scenario of a "walkaround" disturbs me in a number of ways. I have also been continually discouraged by the lack of return on investment that a travel agency visit generates.
I should probably preface the above by saying that I have had successful TA visits...outside of New York City, and with agencies that also service a corporate account that stays with us.
This month I am going to start an TA email solicitation, through a preferred consortia and also a email blast service. I am curious to see what results these efforts get me, especially since it costs about as much as a catered lunch. I will certainly share my success/failure here.
Is anyone else as frustrated with the traditional TA visits as I am? Would I feel differently if I was more of a leisure hotel? How do you feel about the big guys charging for vendor visits, and is it changing how you market yourself?
